Holiday Tips from the Midwest Dairy Council!

With the holidays approaching, moms everywhere are looking for ways to stretch their holiday meal dollars without sacrificing taste or nutrition.  The good news is you can make your entertaining dollars work harder by bringing dairy family recipes and entertaining ideas to the holiday table, compliments of Midwest dairy farm moms. Dollar for dollar, dairy products are one of the most economical sources of nutrition.

The moms who work and live on Midwest dairy farms, like Rebecca Murphy of Schwinn Farms in Kansas, know how to make delicious, nutrient-rich, money-smart holiday meals. Here are a few of their menu and entertaining tips:

  • To save money, buy cheese in block form and slice or cube it yourself. Or use holiday cookie cutters to create festive shapes, and save the scraps for casseroles.
  • Plain, low-fat yogurt makes a great, calcium-rich base for holiday dips! Buy yogurt by the quart and save, then flavor with dry ranch seasoning or soup mixes and serve with veggies.
  • Pinched for time? Cook up a quick gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, using one or two of the more than 300 varies of American-made cheese, and serve with a warm mug of soup, made with milk to boost the nutrition.
  • Remember to serve milk with every meal, not just holiday cookies. At about 25 cents a glass, it packs a lot of nutrients for the money.

As you begin preparing your holiday meal shopping lists, please consider  these tips or dairy-centric holiday recipes to help you plan.  For more tips as well as money-saving recipes from Midwest dairy farm moms, visit www.dairymakessense.com.

One way to help spread the word about dairy is to connect with Rebecca to learn first-hand her tips for creating a budget-friendly nutrient-packed holiday. I would be happy to coordinate a Q&A if you’d like to learn more from this local dairy farm mom.
