Since all my children have flown the coop I have started hosting Sunday dinner. I make an enormous amount of food, and everyone who can, gathers at 6:00 pm to share food, stories, and a good time. One of our favorite meals to share are fajitas. These are most delicious when you use a nice cut of steak, like sirloin, and season it up with lots of garlic, chili powder, and cumin. Then when weather permits, we grill the thin slices of meat outside for the best taste! We like ours served with grilled onions, and bell peppers, and topped with fresh salsa, a squeeze of lime and cheese rolled in a hot flour tortilla.
Don’t be shy, leave a comment about “Celebrating Family” and be entered to win a $20 gift card!
To Double, Or Not To Double….
Posted May 3, 2009
on:That truly is the question. If you shop at more than one chain, as I do, you really need to know what each establishment charges for their goods. That’s why it’s important to start a price list, at the very least, on the things you buy every day. Let me give you an example of how not doing your homework can cost you in the end…
Yesterday I went shopping at Dillons and Walmart. I had in hand a $.40 coupon for Betty Crocker Suddenly Salad. Now right off one might think that going to Dillons and getting $.80 off a box is the only smart choice. But is it? Let’s check. Dillons is selling a box for $2.25. Walmart has it priced for $1.78. Neither of these are sale prices. Now, let’s do the math. $2.25 minus $.80 is $1.45, not a bad price, but $1.78 minus $.40 is $1.38. I realize this is not a huge difference, and if I only shopped at Dillons, I wouldn’t sweat it, but since I visit Walmart as much as Dillons, I’m going for the cheaper of the two prices. I bought four boxes, so that $.07 I saved added up to $.28. Still not that big of a difference, but I’m just really cheap that way, and I know there are others out there who are just as cheap as I am. A penny is a penny!
Another trap you need to be careful of is the lure that a store is going to double your $1.00 coupons. If it’s a store that regularly charges 50% to 150% more than the ones your already shopping at, you better know what your store charges before you spend that money. You might not be getting a deal after all.
If you don’t have the time to do the leg work, but you still want to get the better price, then print off that sale ad and go to Walmart for ad matching. You don’t need all the pages of the ads if you aren’t getting something on each page. They just need to see the store name and the dates of the sale. They usually have the really good stuff on the front page anyway.
So, as you can see, doubling a coupon isn’t always the cheapest way to go!
